Horizontal Multi-Fractured Wells in Channels

Found a channel that’s only 100 m wide? Try using a horizontal well in it.

Horizontal multi-fractured wells are a great solution for narrow channels. Recently some operators have been using this solution in the Countess field.

The best use of horizontal wells may be in narrow channels. The linear nature of a horizontal well suits a narrow channel and can very efficiently drain such a feature.

Not only does a horizontal well reduce the surface disturbance, but it can boost recovery in narrow channel features.

Few geologists are comfortable drilling a well toward the edge of a linear feature. Surprises at the edge can be costly and humiliating.

However a horizontal well drilled down the center of a narrow channel feature can be fractured multiple times to reach out toward the edge of the linear sand body.

Using measurement while drilling (MWD) may allow the drill bit to follow a high perm streak down the middle of a channel feature. This can keep the main hole in the best reservoir relying on the multiple fractures to access edge resources.
